Pre- Departure to Salzburg

There are a few things I am looking forward to this summer, all of which include experiencing different cultures, meeting new people, learning a new language, having a different learning experience, having a change in scenery, and growing personally. From what I have read and heard from other people, studying abroad is a life-changing experience. As a first generation American in my family, I have grown up around a lot of culturally different people. Sometimes I even feel more closely identified with my Hispanic descent because I mostly speak Spanish at home and with my friends. However, I have never had the opportunity to go to Europe, and I am excited to experience yet another culture and way of life. I am a very friendly individual and I would like to meet people my age that live in Salzburg. I would like to know how similar and different our interests and ways of thinking are. I think it is important for me to meet new people in order to develop better communication skills and increase my knowledge of different cultures. I definitely think going to Salzburg will allow me to see my own culture through a new lens. As a first-year voice major, I had to take a diction class in which I learned the basics of four different languages in order to be a more well-rounded singer: English, Italian, German, and French. One of the languages I had a hard time with was German. I look forward to immersing myself in the German language and listening to the way the locals express themselves and put inflections on certain words in order to get their points across. I would like to get accustomed to listening to spoken German and its accent and different sounds so that I can be more confident when I am singing in that language. I think studying abroad will encourage me to study and learn differently. Especially since this program is in Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart, I think it will motivate me with my musical studies and understandings. I think forming part of a culture that has so much love and respect for classical music will hopefully inspire me to be more involved with the songs I decide to sing in the future. There are a lot of things that go hand in hand with a change in scenery, learning to navigate new surroundings and become more independent is a challenge. I think it will give me an opportunity to learn more about myself and my self- reliance, I will be able to gain in life experience and learn to be more organized and how to handle inconvenient situations. I have high expectations for my study abroad experience, I expect it to be an unforgettable one. Hopefully, it will encourage me to continue to travel,  gain a global mindset, and learn to use my spare time to explore and grow as an individual.
