So, I went to Belgium for the weekend on a trip that was planned by others, it ended up being around 5 of us in total. We arrived in Brussels on Friday morning, and the first thing we did was checking-in into our Airbnb. The Airbnb was on the outskirts of Brussels, but it was easily accessible with their bus system. It was also pretty chilly the entire time I was there, it doesn’t reach that temperature until January.
One of the first places I went to was Parc du Cinquantenaire, and it was such a beautiful park. My friend collected chestnuts there because they were all over the place, and from one of the locals they said they were edibles. From there, we wanted to try the famous Belgian fries, so we walked all the way to central Brussels, and made our way to get fries. The fries were not that great, I ended up having fries in Belgium around 3 times and there was nothing particularly special about them. From there, we walked around a bit more and tried waffles and I realized slowly that the plain ones with just sugar on them were a lot better than the ones with whipped cream and fruit. We got to see a famous statue called Manneken Pis, which is a child urinating. There was a crowd around him and I can’t help to wonder why the statue was so special, I barely read about it on Wikipedia or had done any research beforehand.
The next day, we decided to take a day trip to Bruges, and it was such a cute town to visit. There was a discount on the tickets during the weekend, they were half-off. Bruges was a lot more touristy than Brussels was, we ended up eating more fries there and then we climbed this clock tower to see the view. I also got to try Belgian chocolate while I was there, I really didn’t taste that much of a different in taste.
Overall, Belgium was a beautiful country to visit. Brussels is a lot calmer than Barcelona and the overall vibe I got while visiting was soothing. The people there were a lot nicer as well. I also realized while there that my French isn’t as good as I once thought it was. Till later Belgium. I will be visiting Amsterdam, Dublin and several cities in Switzerland over the next week because my university has an almost 2-week long break.
