Some of the best experiences you have while studying abroad are not things you learn about the native culture but things you learn about other cultures. In one of my courses there is a Chinese girl named Jessica. During a grammar exercise she would not repeat the whole sentence rather she would say the first word of the sentence then “blah, blah, blah” then the last few words of the sentence. After class, I asked Jessica if they actually use “blah, blah, blah” in Chinese. She responded simply, “yes.” I just find it amazing that little mannerisms like “blah, blah, blah” are used internationally. Studying abroad has opened my eyes and has allowed me to put faces to cultures. I no longer think of “the Chinese” but rather Jessica.
